    Shamira spotted this vague yet iconic acronym on the long beach walk to Bucerias from Nuevo Vallarta. The recently developed stretch of Riveria Nayarit made for a strange trek featuring cliques of resorts and private homes from quaint to gaudy, impossibly opulent new developments, dog joggers, trash collectors, a few sanctuaries for hatching turtles, and a couple of huge abandoned government plots overgrown with bougainvilleas, coconut palms, and tagged rusted out structures which I didn’t dare explore (on my first visit to a foreign country). Apparently ‘DIF’ stands for Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (The National System for Integral Family Development), the Mexican counterpart to Children’s Services.
